It is recognized that a significant amount of the PWM occurs in the first 48 hrs. However, we recommend focusing on those pigs that would die or be substandard after 2 days of age. This group can be broken down into 2 basic categories.

• Small birthweight pigs generally 2-2.5 lbs. @ > 2 days of age.
• Starve out pigs 3-7 days of age.

 Selection of the right pigs is critical to the success of this technology.  Select pigs that will either die or significantly challenged due to limited nutrition. Do not select pigs that are challenged due to injury, health, or physical defects. 

 

The number of Rescue Decks® needed will vary greatly from farm to farm. Consideration should be given to numerous factors such as:

• Current Prewean mortality.
• Numbers born alive.
• The amount of crossfostering and bump weaning currently being implemented.
• Management level at the farm.
• % underweight or substandard pigs weaned.
